i´ll be the first to admit that my last name isn´t the easiest on the eyes. one could always say it´s spelt like it sounds, yet for some reason i think its foreign linguistic nature has always prevented that ease of explanation from becoming fully realized. regardless, i can say without hesitation that i have known folk for many a year and after thinking our friendship had been firmly solidified in the archives of man, have heard the question, "hey sean, your last name has an accent on the t, right?"
nereida gheller, a worldTeach volunteer, was talking about facebook the other day. we were both wanting to add our new brazilian friend from the hostel in order to stay in touch after his impending departure. she had asked gregory for his contact information and said she´d pass on the info to me. and i said, well, i best write down my surname for you then lady, to which she responded, "what, r-a-m-e-s-w-a-r-a-m?" i was stunned. at this point, i had known this nereida for less than a week. she is clearly ready to teach the world a thing or two about something or the other.
while recalling this story on our hostel terrace to some other worldTeach folk, my main man perry hirsch said, "i could probably spell it too." eager to have him fail miserably, i responded, "all i have is time hermano." he proceeded to spell it correctly.
i guess what i´m trying to say here is that my jaw has been a droppin´and it has had little do do with overflowing "waste tissue" in the garbage can next to the toilet, though that is a little unsettling as well.
stay tuned for more random musings that have little to nothing to do with me being in another country.
